Across from Carnegie Hall, the Park Hyatt New York invited us to reimagine the lighting for its spa and hair salon—two very different spaces, each requiring its own distinct approach while carrying forward the hotel’s welcoming atmosphere.

The spa was designed to feel intimate and immersive. Indirect linear coves trace curving walls, visually softening the space and guiding movement. Highlighted artwork and decorative sconces contrast against darker finishes to create a sense of discovery and add a layer of visual richness. In the treatment rooms, we installed a tunable RGBW+A system, allowing us to create different moods and dynamic scenes. One scene removes visual distractions, using a dimmed warm white perimeter cove paired with low-level undershelf task light. Another introduces a tranquil biophilic atmosphere—green perimeter cove light balanced by blue uplight—designed to enhance relaxation and support circadian cues.

In the hair salon, by contrast, the goal was to provide high-quality, uniform illumination suitable for precision work. A central marquee of decorative luminaires provides diffuse ambient lighting, creating a general base layer. At each mirror, integrated sconces deliver soft vertical illumination for accurate facial rendering. To reinforce general brightness and limit shadowing, we added a linear recessed LED fixture around the room ceiling, while adjustable recessed downlights provide accent lighting at the staff service towers. Floor-to-ceiling windows on one side of the room bring in abundant daylight. We specified 3000K light fixtures, chosen to harmonize with both daylight and the hotel’s overall warm palette.
