For this project, our team took on the lighting design and custom light fixture design for the lobby reception and beachfront restaurant. Aligning with the interior designer, Studio Whynought, our lighting design concept was all about clean lines and a monolithic atmosphere. Our goal was to have guests feel a sense of grandeur and luxury at Shilla Monogram, while being welcomed into the space.
The symmetry of the lobby space was a key point in the lighting design. When guests first arrive at reception, they will walk through an impressive portal flanked by custom lanterns. They will also see windows sweeping across the lobby and the club lounge. Whether guests look left or right, each end of the space is anchored by an eye-catching 4.4M diameter chandelier that adds glitter and drama to the experience.
We worked with the layers the interior designer created in the space, such as double-sided screens in front of artwork and furniture. Each of these elements received attention and unique care in the lighting design, to add visual interest to any piece a guest’s eyes land on. We also placed uplights in sculpture plinths to add drama to the larger pieces. As the lobby is an all-day space, we added uplight layers for a soft bounce during the daytime, which can be dimmed at night, leaving the downlights to spotlight the tables and artwork. The 2700k color temperature lamping we chose uses the white and beige finish of the interior as a soft backdrop to create a warm environment.
Throughout the lobby and restaurant, we designed custom lanterns and table lamps to be uniform, with a mixture of glass and parchment shades as layers of diffusion. For these custom pieces we made sure the fixtures, or an equivalent alternative, could be available locally to ensure operational consistency and efficiency.
